We bought this bus as a part completed restoration project 5 years ago in Saigon.
It was a stripped shell and boxes of bits when we received it. This bus was missing many parts- and many of the original parts were no longer serviceable. We spent a huge amount of time and money on new parts to bring this bus up to the condition it is in today. We know absolutely nothing of its history either!
VW Split screen Buses are amongst the most prized Volkswagens of all time. Their practicality, looks, fuel consumption and ability to carry lots of people, have over the years appealed to the hippy generation, the custom car scene, and now the collectors market. They are wonderfully airy to use and still keep up well with modern traffic (at least in Vietnam!)
VW produced these from 1950 to 1967 when it was replaced by the more common single windscreen “Bay window” model. There are quite a large number of VW buses in use in Vietnam to this day. This particular model seats 8 persons + driver in comfort.
